I can remember a time when I refused to give up my sinful lifestyle because I thought I was having a good time. I felt that I would be giving up too much freedom and pleasure. For that reason, I didn’t want to put away my sin, I wanted to continue in it.

Well, read this verse. “Return to Me; if you will put your abominations out of My sight, then you shall not be moved. And you shall swear the Lord lives, in truth, in judgment and in righteousness.” Jeremiah 4:1-2

What a dummy I was! The truth is, we give up so much in order to live in sin. We give up the experience of a living God, we give up His truth, His justice, His righteousness.

And here’s the thing, we think we’re free, when in fact we’re held captive by our sin. We typically think of the pleasures of sin that we have to give up in order to follow God, but in reality we sacrifice much to follow sin. We sacrifice peace, assurance, confidence, security and so much more.

I’m thankful for God’s promise that if we return to Him and put our sin away, we can enjoy life with Jesus.
