Paul shares these words of instruction and encouragement with us in 2 Corinthians 4:7-9 and 16-17, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellence of the power may be of God and not of us. We are hard-pressed on every side, yet not crushed; we are perplexed, but not in despair; persecuted, but not forsaken; struck down, but not destroyed.

Therefore, we do not lose heart. Even though our outward man is perishing, yet the inward man is being renewed day by day. For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, is working for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory.”

I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve read this passage over the years. And, it has proven to be a timeless passage. No matter when I read it, I find application for my life. Because, like most people, I am often hard-pressed, perplexed, persecuted and struck down.

But, here I am, not crushed, not in despair, not forsaken, not destroyed. Why, because of the excellence of the power of God. If it were up to me, and me alone, to stand against the pressure, the perplexity, the persecution, I would, without a doubt, be destroyed. But, it’s not up to me. It’s up to Jesus in me. I often have to remind myself that … “I can do all things through Christ Jesus who strengthens me.”

So, don’t lose heart, don’t allow the pressures, perplexities, persecutions of the day to crush or destroy you. Depend on Jesus to see you through.

And remember, although our physical body might show signs of fading, our inner man shows no such signs because we’re being renewed day by day.
