“Now He was teaching in the synagogues on the Sabbath. And behold, there was a woman who had a spirit of infirmity eighteen years, and was bent over and could not raise herself up. But, when Jesus saw her, He called her to him and said to her, woman, you are loosed from your infirmity. And He laid His hands on her, and immediately she was made straight, and glorified God” Luke 13:10-13

When I read this passage and I discover that this woman had been bent over for 18 years, I can’t help but wonder about all of the ways she tried to find healing. How many doctors had she seen, how much medicine had she taken, how much therapy had she endured?

Then I wonder how many times she tried to straighten herself up. How often did she wake up in the morning and say to herself, today I’m going to straighten up? I can even imagine her putting her hands on her knees and trying to raise herself up. Then I imagine the pain that would’ve caused.

And, as much as she tried, she could not raise herself up. But, then the scripture tells us that Jesus touched here and she was made straight.

Well, this woman’s story can be compared to life in general. Some of us are bent over, broken, and in pain because of the discouragement and difficulty in life.

And, we may also try all sorts of things to bring healing. We might even try to straighten or raise ourself up, but it doesn’t work. We try and try, and after trying doesn’t work we determine that it must be our lot in life to remain bent over, broken and in pain.

But, we learn from this story that a touch from Jesus can make all the difference in the world. His touch can change our life.

So, whatever has you bent over and broken down today, trust it to Jesus. Ask Him to touch your life with His power, His love, His grace and mercy.
